National New York Central Railroad Museum
The National New York Central Railroad Museum, owned and operated by the City of Elkhart, opened in 1987 in the former New York Central Freight House property.
Interior exhibits originally only occupied two former railroad passenger cars next to the freight house building. Exhibits now fill almost an additional 6,000 square feet of space inside the building.
Outside, a 1940 New York Central steam locomotive, owned by the Lakeshore Railroad Historical Foundation, Inc., has been joined by about 30 other pieces of railroad rolling stock of various types.
Inside a 5 track model train layout and several interactive displays are enjoyed by visitors of all ages. Rentals of Observation/Dining Car also available for parties and events.
The museum is located at 721 S. Main Street, across the tracks from the passenger depot.
